To often with the sale of Management Rights we encounter the problem of transferring website and email account ownership.

The incoming managers are looking for a seamless transition with the assumption the current website and email address will be cleanly transferred accross with the business they are purchasing, however the reality is that this process is often hindered by the outgoing managers lack of consideration to how they have established their web/email accounts.

Let me explain, Many people may not realise that just because you pay the monthly bill to host your website, you may not actually own it. First you need to ensure you own the Domain name, easily checked by going to www.whois.com and entering your complete domain name.

The second most encountered problem is that of the email address. We need to show a practical example to demostrate,

say you domain name is www.towerholidayresort.com.au then the preferred email addresses would be associated with your domain, ie

stay@towerholidayresort.com.au or bookings@towerholidayresort.com.au and so forth.

Too often do we see managers taking the soft option with an email account attached to their carrier rather than to their domain, for example ths could be, towerholidayresort@bigpond.com or towerholidayresort@optusnet.com.au and so forth.

Attaching your email account to your carrier may be fine while you are operating, however the complications arise when you are required to transferr this account to the incoming managers. Most vendors have this as their own personal account aswell and this understandably causes resistance at change over.

So lets think ahead with our websites and email accounts, it will be worth it for everyone in the long run.

If you have any questions on this matter I would be happy to offer some advice.

Happy web browsing.....

Just click here to upload your profile portrait now - its easy!As a web developer for various onsite managers, we too encounter this problem constantly. Monty hit the nail on the head and I can't emphasize this enough. Make sure you set up your business email address as part of your business. Don't use it for personal emailing and don't lock yourself into being forced to stay with BigPond (who I believe are the most extortionately overpriced and underdelivering ISP in the country) by advertising an @bigpond.com.au address to people. Use your business' domain name for your email - not your ISP's domain name.
